Summer Series

Program

About

During this annual series which began in 1999, screenings of classic and contemporary African cinema are held throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx, Harlem, Staten Island and Queens, in public venues, city parks, and educational facilities. Presented in partnership with community-based institutions, screenings take place in conjunction with live performances, talks, and workshops with renowned African artists.

The grand finale to the summer series is the annual Family Day Celebration on Governors Island, a collaboration with the Trust for Governors Island; a free, daylong event featuring open-air African dance classes, beading and African craft workshops, storytelling and double dutch workshops, African and Diaspora cuisine, and a short-film series. Other Summer Series partners have included Queens Museum, Historic Harlem Parks Coalition, CityParks SummerStage, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts and Staten Island Arts.
