Subira is based on an award-winning 2007 short of the same name. Brenda Wairimu stars as the free-spirited titular character, who struggles to live out her dream of swimming in the ocean, against local customs and an arranged marriage. The film addresses thoroughly modern African social issues.

About the Director

Ravneet Chadha

Ravneet Sippy Chadha is an author, director and producer. She was born and raised in India where she completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She then went to Toronto, Canada for further studies where she lived for eight years. She moved to Nairobi, Kenya in 1997 where she currently lives with her husband and two children. Sippy started her career with such award winning short films as Kibera Kid (2007), Charcoal Traffic (2008), and Tick Tock (2009) to name a few. Subira, the short film (2008) which she wrote, directed and produced won 15 international awards and was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in France. Subira (2018), her first feature film, is based on the short and is Kenya’s official entry to the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. Learn More
