"Hyenas," by Djibril Diop Mambéty / Senegal / 1992 / 113mins / Drama, Comedy / Wolof
Join us for a Cinema Under the Stars screening of Djibril Diop Mambety's newly restored 1992 classic, Hyenas, in collaboration with Staten Island Arts / Cinema Connex at Craft House!
Mambéty adapts a timeless parable of human greed into a biting satire of today's Africa–betraying the hopes of independence for the false promises of Western materialism. Linguère Ramatou is a beautiful, young woman from a sleepy village who falls in love with a young man. When she becomes pregnant with his child, he denies paternity so he could marry a wealthy wife. With the villagers driving Linguère from home, her ideals are shattered. She turns to prostitution and miraculously becomes the richest woman in the world, "as rich as the World Bank."
