About the Film
In 1969, Weldon Irvine penned “Young, Gifted and Black”, Nina Simone’s electrifying anthem that celebrated both the rousing work of prolific artists like Lorraine Hansberry and the potential of future Black leaders. Though Irvine himself was Simone’s creative director, a brilliant pianist, a fearless playwright, and mentor to generations of jazz, funk and hip hop musicians, this legend’s story has largely gone untold. Through rare archival footage and in-depth conversations with Irvine’s contemporaries, collaborators and family, this documentary unearths his visionary contributions and dedication to Black liberation and expression.
