Biography

Chiemeka Offor is a Nigerian-American multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. She currently focuses on editorial photography, poetic experimental short films, and painting. Chiemeka hopes to magnify and uplift black women by using her art to highlight their experiences, their strengths, and the realities of Western beauty expectations and assimilation. She uses self-portraiture often as a way to speak up for herself and others in her community. She wants more young black women to take up space and the spotlight that they have long deserved. Chiemeka takes much inspiration from her dreams, afro-futurism, and surrealism. By using dramatic elements of light, color, distortion, and fashion, she hopes to mesh the two worlds of fashion photography and visual activism.

Her artwork has been featured in Cultured, i-D, Vogue Italia, Women’s Wear Daily, Buzzfeed Photo, Frieze, and Office Magazine. Chiemeka has also received National recognition as a Grand Prize Winner in the Smithsonian Teen Portrait Competition for her portrait “Showtime”, and a 2020 National Young Arts Foundation Award in Photography. In late 2020, she joined the Converse All-Stars Team where she collaborates with Converse and other young artists striving to break barriers in their communities. Most recently, she captured Nigerian designer Tia Adeola for a Vogue Interview, participated in the 2022 New York Times Portfolio Review, and was selected as one of PhotoVogue’s Next Great Fashion Imagemakers. Her work was featured at the PhotoVogue Festival in Milan in November 2022. In the spring of 2023, she joined the 2023 Voice X PhotoVogue NFT Residency and is currently pursuing a major in Film and Television at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she continues to construct visual and sensory worlds of inclusion through her intersectional and community-driven work.
