In a sense John Akar instituted the National Dance Troupe of Sierra Leone as the principal vehicle of his confidence in the newly independent nation and love for country. He leaped eagerly to test his standard of excellence in theatre to international acclaim. The troupe’s first success was its performance at the 1964 World’s Fair, where it was judged the best dance ensemble. Then the troupe traveled to the 1965 Commonwealth Arts Festival in London. The following year, the troupe performed at the Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, after which they did a four month tour of Western Europe.
