Kavaa has travelled upcountry to the funeral of her grandfather who disowned her when she was born out of wedlock twenty two (22) years earlier.At the awkward family reunion, Kavaa finds acceptance with the village outlier who catapults her into a liminal realm, where she meets her great grand matriach, Syowia, who urgently tells her she must ‘mend the cord’. She must face off with her grandfather and rise above his rejection to find new self esteem for herself and no longer carry what was never hers to bear.

Khaliyesa B. Minishi

Khaliyesa Barbara Minishi begun her career in 2003 in Fashion & Editorial photography and expanded her practice into the realms of film production design, directing and experimental sound.  She won an Africa Movie Award for Art Direction in notable Kenyan film, Nairobi Half Life and was Nairobi Unit Art Director, for Netflix Series Sense 8, season 1. In 2022 she wrote and directed her first immersive 360 immersive short film, Utawala.
Her fiction directorial short film debut, “Inheritance”, about a young woman reclaiming her voice had its Kenyan premiere in 2024 and will be travelling globally in 2025. Learn More
