by Hind Alsheikh & Mustafa Jawhar
Sudan / 2013 / 15mins / Documentary / Arabic
This film narrates the story of an old abandoned cinema in Kosti, a town in White Nile state. The filmmakers and the whole town pay tribute to the cinema as they recollect the contribution it made in its heyday to the culture and heritage and the identity of the town.
Part of the Cultural Healing project, based on a concept developed by British-Sudanese filmmaker Taghreed Elsanhouri, a creative peace-building project in Sudan that trained journalism students, civil society representatives and young people to make short documentary films which expressed their cultures and traditions.
Hind Alsheikh
Hind Alsheikh is a filmmaker from Sudan. Alsheikh took part in the The Cultural Healing workshop, a concept developed by British-Sudanese filmmaker Taghreed Elsanhouri, a creative peace-building project in Sudan that trained journalism students, civil society representatives and young people to make short documentary films which expressed their cultures and traditions. His short documentary, Coming Soon, co-directed with Mustafa Jawhar was a result of this project. A quote from the filmmakers: "What attracted me to the Cultural Healing project was its proposal to confront the important issues in Sudan like peaceful coexistence, diversity and accepting and respecting the other. Documentary story telling is a powerful means of highlighting social issues and I was able to gain practical experience with the use of this medium. Being a filmmaker in Sudan is a challenge - it is possible to encounter delays, red tape or even confiscation of equipment." Learn More
