Marie Clémence is a French / Malagasy filmmaker known for making documentary feature films where music is both narrative and pretext, along with her husband, director and DOP Cesar Paes. She holds a Masters degree in Sociology and a Marketing CELSA-Sorbonne Diploma. In 1988, she launched Laterit Productions, an independent production company based in Paris, committed in distribution and publishing. With her husband, she wrote and produced documentaries such as Angano...Angano, Tales from Madagascar, Songs and Tears of Nature, and Awara Soup. Their films have won top awards at Cinema du Réel, Festival dei Popoli and Leipzig Film Festival. Their previous films, Saudade do Futuro, Mahaleo, An Opera from the Indian Ocean and Songs for Madagascar have been theatrically released in France and in the USA, and some of them have been screened by Arte, WDR, WNYC, Canal+, and Taiwanese public TV. Fahavalo, Madagascar 1947 (2018) was her first film as director.
